Health and Safety Policy for Cleaners Haringey
This Health and Safety policy sets out how Cleaners Haringey manages and promotes safe working practices for all employees, contractors and others who may be affected by our cleaning activities. We are committed to providing a clean, healthy and safe environment in all premises where we operate, including homes, offices and commercial spaces in and around Haringey.
Policy Statement
Cleaners Haringey recognises its duty to protect the health, safety and welfare of all staff, clients, visitors and members of the public who may be affected by our work. We aim to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health by identifying hazards, assessing risks and putting effective control measures in place.
We will provide suitable information, instruction, training and supervision to ensure that all cleaning tasks are completed safely and in accordance with current health and safety requirements and industry best practice.
Responsibilities
The management of Cleaners Haringey has overall responsibility for implementing this Health and Safety policy, reviewing it regularly and ensuring that adequate resources are made available to maintain safe working conditions.
Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for day-to-day health and safety management, monitoring cleaning activities, reporting hazards, and ensuring that staff follow agreed procedures and use equipment correctly.
All employees, including part-time and temporary staff, must take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their work. Staff must follow training and instructions, use protective equipment as provided, report hazards and incidents promptly, and never interfere with or misuse anything provided for health and safety.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Cleaners Haringey will carry out risk assessments covering typical cleaning tasks and environments, including domestic properties, offices, communal areas and commercial premises. These assessments will identify hazards such as slips, trips, falls, manual handling, use of cleaning chemicals, use of equipment, lone working and work at height.
From these assessments, we will develop safe systems of work and method statements. These will be communicated to staff through induction and ongoing training. Work must not be carried out where unacceptable risks are identified, and staff are empowered to stop work if they believe conditions are unsafe.
Training, Supervision and Competence
All new employees receive health and safety induction training before starting work. This includes information on company procedures, emergency arrangements, safe use of cleaning products and equipment, manual handling, personal protective equipment and reporting processes.
Additional task-specific training is provided where required, such as for operating machinery, working in high-risk environments or handling specialised cleaning agents. Training will be refreshed periodically and whenever procedures change. Supervisors will monitor working practices and provide guidance and feedback to maintain safe standards.
Use of Chemicals and COSHH
Cleaning chemicals will be selected, stored, used and disposed of safely and in accordance with relevant control of substances hazardous to health requirements. Only approved products supplied by the company may be used during work.
Safety data sheets and risk assessments for each cleaning chemical will be available to staff. Employees will receive training on correct dilution, application, ventilation requirements, contact times and the importance of never mixing incompatible substances. Where necessary, appropriate protective gloves, eye protection or other personal protective equipment will be provided and must be used.
Personal Protective Equipment
Cleaners Haringey will provide suitable personal protective equipment based on risk assessments. This may include gloves, aprons, eye protection, non-slip footwear, masks or other items where required by the task or environment.
Staff are responsible for wearing PPE as instructed, looking after it, and reporting any loss or damage. Faulty or worn items will be replaced. PPE is a supplementary measure and does not replace the need to eliminate or reduce risks at source wherever reasonably practicable.
Manual Handling and Work Equipment
Manual handling tasks such as lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling will be assessed and reduced wherever possible through the use of trolleys, extendable tools or alternative methods. Staff will be trained in safe lifting techniques and encouraged to avoid unnecessary strain, awkward postures or overreaching.
All cleaning equipment, including vacuum cleaners, floor machines, extension poles and other tools, will be maintained in safe working order. Defective equipment must be removed from use immediately and reported. Staff must use equipment only for its intended purpose and in line with instructions and training.
Lone Working and Client Premises
Many cleaning tasks involve staff working alone or in small teams, often in client premises. Cleaners Haringey will assess the risks associated with lone working and put in place measures to manage them, such as agreed check-in arrangements, clear schedules, and information on the premises layout and emergency procedures.
Staff must respect client property, follow any site-specific safety rules and ensure that access routes are kept clear. Doors and windows should be secured as required on leaving. Any concerns about personal safety or security must be reported immediately.
Housekeeping, Slips, Trips and Falls
Good housekeeping is essential to safe cleaning. Staff must manage trailing cables, clean up spills promptly, use appropriate warning signs for wet floors and ensure that equipment and materials are stored tidily when not in use.
Where floors are wet or slippery during or after cleaning, warning signs must be clearly placed and removed only when the area is safe for normal use. Extra caution should be taken in stairwells, entrances and other high-traffic areas.
Accidents, Incidents and First Aid
All accidents, near misses, incidents of violence or aggression, and any damage to property must be reported as soon as possible to a supervisor or manager. Records will be kept and reviewed to identify any trends and areas for improvement.
Where first aid resources are available on site, staff must know their location and how to summon assistance. Staff should familiarise themselves with client emergency arrangements, including fire exits, alarms and assembly points.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
Cleaners Haringey will monitor health and safety performance through incident reports, audits, supervision feedback and staff consultation. This policy and associated procedures will be reviewed periodically and updated where necessary to reflect changes in law, guidance, work practices or identified risks.
All employees are encouraged to contribute suggestions for improving health and safety. Working together, we aim to maintain a safe, healthy and professional cleaning service for all clients and staff across our service areas.
